Conscious Construction, by Nacho Martín

Conscious Construction is a photography exhibition that explores the value of traditional architecture through its interiors, materials and traces of the people who once lived there. Created by Nacho Martín, it is on display at the Riogordo Ethnographic Museum until 31 October 2026.

The photographs take us inside historic farmhouses, mills and homes. A kitchen, a built-in cupboard or a stone wall offers a glimpse into the everyday lives of past generations and a way of building shaped by the climate, available resources and each family’s needs.

Understanding Before Renovating

Drawing on his experience in construction and his work leading Escanda Building Solutions, Nacho encourages us to look carefully at a home before changing it. Understanding how it was built helps us recognise what deserves to be preserved, what needs repairing and how it can be adapted to modern life.

The exhibition asks a simple question: how can we improve these homes while preserving what makes them unique?

What These Homes Can Teach Us

Courtyards, orientation, thick walls and local materials all served a purpose. Understanding these features can help us plan renovations that respect the character and needs of each building.

Conscious Construction grew from an interest in these places and a desire to see their value recognised before they disappear. The photographs invite us to look more closely and discover possibilities where we might otherwise see only an old house.
